STEP 7 OF 8

Prepare Your First Lessons

You don't need to be a professional teacher. Here's how to teach effectively at home.

How Do I Actually Teach?

The Little Lights teaching method is simple and effective:

1

Explain

Tell your child what they are learning.

2

Show

Demonstrate the concept.

3

Do It Together

Practice with your parent support.

4

Let Child Try

Give an independent attempt where appropriate.

5

Use the Printable

Practice on paper with a worksheet.

6

Talk About It

Ask simple questions to check understanding.

7

Review Later

Return to the concept another day.

Example: Teaching Number 5

"Today we're learning about the number five."

Show the number 5
Count 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 blocks together
Ask child to build a group of 5
Trace 5 in the air
Complete the Number 5 printable
Find groups of 5 around the home
Review tomorrow

Key point: The worksheet is part of the lesson—not the entire lesson. The parent teaches first, then the child practices on paper.

What If My Child Doesn't Understand?

Try another way. Learning isn't always linear:

Use physical objects
Draw it
Say it differently
Use fewer problems
Practice together
Return to an easier example
Take a break
Try another day
Seek appropriate professional/educational support when persistent concerns require it

Don't force mastery in one day. Learning requires repetition. Seeing a skill once does not mean a child should immediately master it. That's why review is built into every Little Lights lesson.

What If It's Too Easy?

Move forward
Use an extension activity
Apply the skill differently
Try a real-world example

Avoid busywork just to fill time. If your child has mastered a concept, move forward.
